Mozart may not even have heard all three before he died. Symphony No. 39 (the first of the final trilogy) is Mozart’s only mature symphony without oboes, instead featuring clarinets. It is also one of his few symphonies to begin with a slow introduction, a structure favored by Haydn.

The date of completion of this symphony is known exactly since Mozart in his mature years kept a full catalog of his completed works; he entered the 40th Symphony into it on 25 July 1788. Work on the symphony occupied an exceptionally productive period of just a few weeks during which time he also completed the 39th and 41st symphonies (26 June and 10 August, respectively). [3]

This symphony is the first in the last set of Mozart’s three symphonies, written in the summer of 1788. They are occasionally referred to as his “London” symphonies, as it was presumed that the composer, like Haydn before him, had them written for a planned tour to that city. His Symphony No. 39 had zero fanfare or announcement vis-a-vis its introduction. There is no firm date for its premiere, and Mozart’s plan to introduce it at the “Concerts in the Casino” series was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. Sometimes upcoming concerts programmed an “unidentified symphony” which possibly was number 39.
